Outdoor Patio Furniture Covers
Outdoor Patio Furniture Covers - What Needs
To Be Covered?
Patio furniture can cost a small fortune.
Long gone are the days when a few cheap plastic chairs would do the job. Today, patio furniture is an extension
of our indoor decorating sense and personality. Even apartment dwellers are now paying attention to what type of
furniture their neighbors can see, and they are very choosy about what they bring home to put on display. Of
course, with all this effort, it's very important to take care of your new investment with the right outdoor
patio furniture covers.
What you cover will depend on where you
live and why you want it covered. In some sections of the country such as Miami and southern California, patio
furniture can stay outdoors all year long. Unlike other areas where heavy patio furniture would need to be
secured outside for about five months a year, these tropical climates mandate different types of
covers.
If your furniture will be left outside and
exposed to the elements, it's a good idea to invest in some good quality heat resistant covers for everything
including your grill, all the chairs, and even your outdoor bar. All that sunshine plays havoc on the colors;
fabrics will fade, shred and deteriorate at a pretty fast clip, and even wood will look weathered before its
time.
Of course, if you use your furniture on a
regular basis, covering it all the time might be more of a hassle than you want to deal with. You have a few
choices. You can put your furniture someplace where it's covered and in the shade all the time. Or, you can
build a portico to surround your furniture and keep it safe.
However, if all this sounds like overkill
just to save a few chairs and tables from the elements, then you'll need to invest in covers that fit as well as
possible and can either be securely fastened or are custom made.
One thing you might want to think about is
what they call "group coverings". This option is a great idea when you do use your furniture on a regular but
you don't want to spend the time fussing with the covers every time you just want to go out and have some coffee
with your morning paper. Group coverings do just that - they are shaped like tarps with either a tie or some
elastic at the bottom and you stretch the cover over your table and chairs.
You also have the option of buying some
custom fitted and designed covers that are not only meant to stay on, but they come in colors and have built in
padded seats, etc. These are similar to slip covers you would buy for your living room couch except they are
water proof.
If you live in a section of the country
where the furniture does need to stay out all year, you'll need two different types of covers. You should have
covers that will withstand ice and snow for months at a time without cracking, and then separate covers for
intermittent use during summer months.
